Johann Ludwig Burckhardt befand sich um 1814 im Rahmen seiner Pilgerfahrt auf der arabischen Halbinsel und erlebte dort hautnah das 1. Wahhabitenreich. In seiner Abhandlung Bemerkungen über die Beduinen und Wahaby, berichtet er ausführlich über den Charakter dieses Reiches und über die Kämpfe die zu seinem Untergang führten.
Im folgenden Auszug stellt er kurz dar, wie der wahhabitische Regent Saud seine Araber führte:
„Er ließ sie im Genuss ihrer Freiheit, nötigte sie aber, in Frieden zu leben, das Eigentum zu achten und den Bestimmungen des Gesetzes Folge zu leisten.
So wurde denn mit dem Fortschritte der Zeit das Oberhaupt der Wahaby Regent vom größeren Teile Arabiens. Seine Regierung war frei, weil sie sich auf das System eines Beduinenstaates gründete. Er war das Oberhaupt aller Scheikhs (Emire) der einzelnen Stämme und leitete ihre politischen Angelegenheiten, während alle Araber innerhalb ihrer Stämme völlig unabhängig und in Freiheit blieben, nur jetzt gehalten waren, den strengen Sinn des Gesetzes zu beobachten, und sich Strafen aussetzten, wenn sie dagegen handelten.
