Das ist wirklich ein sehr schöner Spruch, der hier im Netz seine Verbreitung findet.

»Ich bin Muslim, der Islam ist perfekt, ich nicht.
Wenn ich Fehler mache, dann gebt mir die Schuld, nicht dem Islam.«

Leider weiß ich nicht, welchen Urheber diese Weisheit hat, aber mit dem Inhalt kann sich sicherlich jeder Muslim anfreunden. Mich motivierte dieser Sinnspruch zu einer weiterführenden Überlegung.

Es müsste für einen Muslim eigentlich eine Selbstverständlichkeit sein, dass der Islam perfekt (also frei von Mängeln und Fehlern) ist, immerhin kommt er – unserer festen Überzeugung nach – vom Schöpfer, Lenker und Erhalter des gesamten Universums. Doch schadet es nicht, den Muslim von Zeit zu Zeit wieder daran zu erinnern, denn wie wir ja aus dem obigen Sprüchlein wissen, ist der Muslim nicht perfekt, denn er ist fehlbar.

Wenn diese beiden Einsichten klar sind, dann können wir die Substantive Islam und Muslim richtig einordnen. Es fehlt aber noch etwas wichtiges, quasi eine Auslassung im Text, denn der Muslim, wenn er einen Fehler macht, ist nicht allein dadurch entschuldigt, dass er nicht perfekt ist. Zum Muslimsein gehört nämlich noch die Eigenschaft, die eigenen Fehler möglichst einzusehen, zu bereuen und sich zu bemühen sie abzustellen.

Um es kurz zu sagen: Der Muslim ist zwar nicht perfekt, sollte aber nach Perfektion streben. Sein Ideal soll der bestmögliche Zustand sein, mit so wenig Fehlern wie möglich.

Unter dieser Prämisse kann man auch die attributiven Adjektivierungen dieser Substantive betrachten und verstehen. Wenn wir also etwas als »islamisch« bezeichnen, dann statten wir es mit den göttlichen Attributen des Islams aus (perfekt, frei von Mängeln und Fehlern), und bezeichnen wir etwas als »muslimisch«, dann kann es nicht perfekt sein, da es mit den menschlichen Attributen eines Muslims ausgestattet ist, also mit Fehlbarkeit.

Leider zeigt der zeitgenössische Sprachgebrauch, besonders auch unter abendländischen Muslimen, keine solche Unterscheidung. Dabei handelt es sich doch um eine gewaltige Aussage, einen Menschen, eine menschliche Institution oder ein menschliches Machwerk als islamisch zu bezeichnen. Gebietet es nicht die Zurückhaltung und Bescheidenheit, die eigene Person und das eigene Werk mit den menschlichen Attributen des Muslims auszustatten?

Man soll mich nicht falsch verstehen. Das Adjektiv islamisch hat ganz sicher seine Berechtigung, nämlich immer dann, wenn wir ein Ideal umschreiben, welches uns anzustreben empfohlen ist. So sind wir angehalten, dass islamische Gebet zu verrichten, aber unser Gebet, wenn wir es verrichtet haben, ist und bleibt das Gebet eines Muslims, niemals perfekt. Die Tugenden, die Allah – der Hocherhabene – und Sein Gesandter – Allah segne ihn und schenke ihm Heil – uns auferlegten, sind unzweifelhaft islamische Tugenden, aber im Resultat, wenn wir versuchen sie bestmöglich in der Lebenspraxis umzusetzen, sind sie bestenfalls ein Schatten dessen, was wirklich islamisch ist.

Und aus dieser Perspektive schaue ich auf unsere Sprachpraxis, wenn ich die Machwerke der Muslime betrachte. Wir kennen islamische Vereine, islamische Parteien, islamische Schulen, islamische Kindergärten, islamische Gelehrte und eine islamische Nation. Und wir haben in Deutschland sogar eine Islamische Zeitung und im Nahen Osten einen Islamischen Staat.

Verspürten die Muslime auch in der Vormoderne schon den Drang, ihre fehlbaren Handlungen und Werke als islamisch, also quasi unfehlbar zu bezeichnen? Man vergleiche mal die Literatur der Vormoderne mit der Literatur des heutigen Zeitalters, egal ob im Abend- oder Morgenland. Die Adjektive islamisch, islamic, islamiyya  usw. finden sich, wenn überhaupt, nur ganz selten, während sie heute allgegenwärtig sind.

Wie will man unter diesen sprachlichen Voraussetzungen von einem Unwissenden oder Nichtmuslim verlangen, die obige Weisheit ernst zu nehmen?
