Ein Zeichen für das Erreichen dieses Zenits, ist die letzte Generation, die in diese Phase der Zivilisation hinein geboren wird und in den Genuss dieses zivilisatorischen Hochstandes kommt, aber nicht die geringste Ahnung davon hat, auf welchen Fundamenten und durch welche Tugenden diese Hochkultur entstehen konnte.
Sie genießen also in allen Zügen, wie niemand vor ihnen, zehren von einem mannigfaltigen Reichtum, den sie weder erbracht haben, noch in der Lage sind zu erhalten. Sie verbinden mit diesem Hochstand, in den sie hinein geboren wurden, einen großen Stolz und empfinden Geringschätzung für sämtliche anderen Gesellschaften, die diesen Zenit noch nicht erreicht haben oder bereits über ihn hinausgegangen sind.
„Rückständig“ sind die anderen, „Barbaren“, die man verabscheut, ja geradezu fürchtet ob ihrer rauen und vom Leben gezeichneten Einfachheit.
Lange macht man sich etwas vor, will den Abgrund am Zenit nicht sehen, glaubt man könne ihn künstlich, durch Zwänge und willfährige Eingriffe in die natürliche Ordnung verbauen. Aber die Zivilisationen dieser Welt sind zyklisch und wir Menschen sind so erbärmlich schwach und neigen dazu, uns auf dem Ruhm unserer Vorfahren auszuruhen.
Und so geht es dann bergab, viel rapider als zuvor bergauf, und zusätzlich durch die vorigen Eingriffe und ihre erzeugten Illusionen und Blasen um ein vielfaches beschleunigt.
Doch Besinnung will auch jetzt nicht eintreten. Die Menschen sind entfremdet vom Ursprung ihrer Zivilisation, und benommen vom Rausch des falschen Stolzes sehen sie die Schuld am Debakel nicht bei sich, sondern bei den Fremden, bei den Rückständigen, den Barbaren, sie wollen die Hochkultur okkupieren, sie auf ihr niederes Niveau stürzen.
Doch was sie dabei vergessen ist, dass dort unten, am Nadir, am Tiefpunkt der Zivilisation, auch sein Fußpunkt liegt. Denn so, wie der Zenit, der Höhepunkt, den Abstieg einläutet, so läutet der Nadir, der Tiefpunkt, den Aufstieg ein … unweigerlich.
