Im 2. Teil dieser Reihe habe ich den Auszug aus dem Sendschreiben „Über das Lob der Kaufleute und den Tadel der öffentlichen Ämter“ des berühmten Literaten ʿAmr ibn Bahr al-Jahiz (159-255 n. H.) begonnen. Dort ging es inhaltlich in erster Linie um die Verurteilung desjenigen, der in seinem Loblied (auf die Beamten der Dawla) die Kaufleute tadelte. Des weiteren verteidigte al-Jahiz die Kaufleute als gute Muslime und machte darauf aufmerksam, dass es solche auch unter den Salaf gab.
In diesem 3. und letzten Teil möchte ich den Auszug aus dem Sendschreiben des al-Jahiz fortsetzen. Nun geht der Autor dazu über, die Sekretäre (Beamten) der Dawla zu portraitieren und erteilt ihnen anbei einen großen Tadel.
« […] Jeder Sekretär ist zur Loyalität verurteilt, und man verlangt von ihm, dass er Mühseligkeiten auf sich nimmt; dies sind die verschiedenen Bedingungen, die ihm auferlegt sind, und die vollkommene Prüfung, die ihn erwartet. Der Sekretär darf sich aber seinerseits nichts dergleichen ausbedingen, vielmehr beschuldigt man ihn beim ersten Versehen der Säumigkeit, obgleich er sich abhetzt, und selbst wenn er noch nicht geübt ist, erreicht ihn beim ersten Fehler der Tadel. Der Sklave hat wenigstens das Recht, durch Beschwerde von seinem Herrn mehr zu verlangen und, wenn er es wünscht, um Wechsel des Besitzers zu bitten, während der Sekretär weder die Ausbezahlung seines ausstehenden Gehalts fordern noch seinem Herrn davonlaufen kann, wenn die Beziehungen schwierig werden. Seine Rechtsstellung ist die der Sklaven, und sein Platz unter der Dienerschaft ist der von Dummköpfen. Trotz alledem steht er aber an der äußersten Spitze der Prahlerei, auf dem höchsten Gipfel des Stolzes und auf dem Meer, das von Hochmut und Maßlosigkeit überfließt.
Manch einer von ihnen bildet sich ein, wenn er sein weitärmeliges Gewand verbreitere, seine Schleppe verlängere, seine Schläfenlocke über seine Wange flechte und auf seiner Stirn von seinem Haar zwei Winkel abschneide, sei er einer, dem Gefolgschaft geleistet wird, und kein Untergebener und ein Lehnsherr über dem Lehnsmann. Sobald ein Anfänger den Platz der Führung betreten und sich im Rat des Kalifats eingerichtet hat, eine Korbwand ihn abschließt und das Tintenfass vor ihm steht, sobald er aus der Rhetorik die brillantesten Redensarten und aus der Wissenschaft die geistvollsten Geschichten auswendig weiß, die Sprichwörter des Buzurgmihr, das Vermächtnis des Ardasir, die Sendschreiben des Abdalhamid und den adab des Ibn al-Muqaffa‘ erzählen kann und sobald er das Buch des Mazdak zur Fundgrube seines Wissens und die Sammlung Kalila wa Dimna zum Schatz seiner Weisheit gemacht hat, hält er sich für den großen Faruq in Sachen der Verwaltung, für Ibn Abbas in der Wissenschaft der Koranauslegung, für Mu’ad bin Jabal in der Kenntnis des Erlaubten und Verbotenen, für ‘Ali bin Abi Talib in der Kühnheit zu Entscheidungen und Urteilen, für Abul-Huhail al-Allaf in Fragen der Atomistik und der sprunghaften Mutation (tafra), für Ibrahim bin Sajjar an-Nazzam in der Lehre vom kumun und von der muganasa, für Hussain an-Najjar in der Kenntnis der religiösen Pflichten und in der Lehrmeinung von der Vorherbestimmung und für al-Asma’i und Abu ‘Ubaida in der Lexikographie und Genealogie.
Das erste, womit er anfängt, ist die Anordnung des Korans anzufechten und über ihn wegen der darin enthaltenen Widersprüche das Urteil zu fällen. Dann legt er seinen Scharfsinn an den Tag, indem er die Überlieferungen für falsch erklärt und diejenigen, welche die Traditionen übermitteln, herabsetzt. Wenn jemand den Prophetengenossen den Vorzug gibt, verzieht er dabei die Mundwinkel und kehrt ihm, wenn von ihren vortrefflichen Eigenschaften die Rede ist, den Rücken. Wenn man Suraih zitiert, hält er ihn für unzuverlässig, und lobt man vor ihm al-Hasan, so findet er ihn unausstehlich; wenn man in seiner Gegenwart ash-Sha’bi lobt, hält er ihn für dumm, wenn man zu ihm von Ibn Jubair spricht, erklärt er ihn für unwissend, und gibt man ihm gegenüber an-Naha’i den Vorrang, so erachtet er ihn für unbedeutend. Daraufhin bricht er auf der Stelle die Debatte ab und erzählt von der Politik des Ardasir Babakan, von der Verwaltung des Anusirwan und von der Ordnung, die im Lande unter den Sassaniden herrschte.
Muss er vor Spitzeln auf der Hut sein und unterziehen ihn Muslime einer Prüfung, so führt er zwar Überlieferungen vom Propheten an, geht aber dann zu den rationalen Wissenschaften über, zitiert wohl «feste» Koranverse, wendet sich darauf jedoch den «aufgehobenen» zu. Er verwirft alles, was nicht durch den Augenschein wahrnehmbar ist, und gleicht das Unsichtbare dem Sichtbaren an. Von den Büchern heißt er nur die Logik (des Aristoteles) gut, lobt nur den, der keinen Anklang findet, und hält nur den für ausgezeichnet, der keinen Zulauf hat […]
Ein Beweis dafür ist die Tatsache, dass man niemals einen Sekretär gesehen hat, der den Koran zu seinem Lieblingsbuch, die Auslegung des heiligen Buches zur Grundlage seines Wissens, den Kenntniserwerb in der Religion zu seiner Losung und die Bewahrung der Traditionen und Überlieferungen zum Eckpfeiler seiner Bildung gemacht hätte. Und findet man einen, der etwas aus dem Koran und der Tradition anführt, so zeigen seine Kinnbacken dabei keine Gelöstheit, und seinem Speichel fehlt die Süße. Wenn es einer von ihnen vorzieht, sich um das Studium des Hadith zu bemühen, und es sich angelegen sein lässt, die Bücher der Rechtsgelehrten zu zitieren, so finden ihn seine Genossen unleidlich und seine Kollegen anrüchig; sie rechnen es ihm als Entgleisung in seiner Lebensweise und als Abweichen in seinem Beruf an, da er etwas erstrebt, was nicht in seinem Wesen liege, und etwas sucht, was nicht von seiner Art sei.»
