Die Kultur des Menschen ist zum einen, in ihrem technischen Aspekt, Mittel des Überlebens und der Naturbeherrschung. Der Mensch ist, wie Gehlen in Bezug auf Herder sagt, ein Mängelwesen, das im Gegensatz zu den Tieren nicht fähig ist, seine Versorgung nur durch die bescheidenen Mittel der eigenen Leibeskraft zu erlangen. Anders als das Raubtier, das allein Kraft seiner Geschwindigkeit, seiner Klauen und Zähne das Beutetier erlegt, bedarf die menschliche Jagd Werkzeuge.
Der andere Aspekt der Kultur speist sich aus seinen seelischen Kräften. Motor der menschlichen Kultur in diesem Sinne ist sein ihm wesensmäßig zu eigene Rastlosigkeit im Angesichte der Frage nach Sinn und Zweck des eigenen Daseins und der sicheren, gar quälenden Gewissheit seiner unentrinnbaren Sterblichkeit. Die Verarbeitung dieser Einwirkungen auf den menschlichen Geist treibt sein Kulturschaffen an. Man kennt die Leistungen mittelalterlicher Baukunst, der wir die Kathedralen unserer Städte verdanken. Gebaut von zahllosen Unbekannten und Vergessenen, die sicher sein konnten, niemals dem Gottesdienst in der Zeit nach ihrer Vollendung beiwohnen zu können, denn es würden bis dahin noch Jahrzehnte vergehen. Trotzdem mühten sie sich ab, die Gotteshäuser zu errichten, in der Hoffnung, dafür ihren Lohn im Jenseits zu erhalten. So schafft das Bewusstsein um die Realität des Todes die Kultur, an der sich Generation um Generation erfreut.
Nun ist heute die Zeit, da der Mensch sich vom Faktum seiner Sterblichkeit zu emanzipieren sucht, zumindest im Sinne des Verdrängens. Die Moderne Medizin hat sich darum verdient gemacht, Krankheit und Sterben erträglicher zu machen. Zumindest im physischen Sinne. Man kennt die Traueranzeigen heutiger Tage, in denen auch das Ableben von über achtzig und neunzig Jährigen kommentiert wird wie das eines Kindes. Plötzlich und unerwartet dem Leben entrissen! Dies bereits verdeutlicht doch die Abkehr vom Bewusstsein, dass der Tod, wenn auch erschütternd, ebenso wie das Leben zu seinem Recht kommen muss. Doch wenn das konkrete Bewusstsein des Menschen für seine Sterblichkeit schwindet, so wird auch die geistige Kraft schwinden, die die Kultur gebärt. So braucht man sich nicht zu wundern, dass die Formen unserer Kultur heute allem Erbaulichen abhold sind, das alles nur noch nach Aufruhr und Exzess schreit und sich gegenseitig in Abscheulichkeit zu überbieten trachtet.
