C. Die übrigen Schriften (Ketubim):
- die drei poetischen Schriften: Psalmen, Sprüche, Hiob;
- die fünf Rollen (Megillot): Hoheslied, Ruth, Klagelieder, Prediger, Esther:
- die drei geschichtlichen Schriften: Daniel, Esra, Nehemia (und Chronik).
Die Sepuaginta und der Talmud bieten ein anderes Einteilungsprinzip, aber das hier dargelegte ist in fast allen jüdischen Bibelausgaben üblich. Die fünf „Rollen“ haben die Reihenfolge der Feste, an denen sie in der Synagoge gelesen werden. Den Schwerpunkt der Bibel bildet die Thora, die ursprünglich allein Heilige Schrift war. Die übrigen Teile haben eine spätere Entstehungszeit und sind im Laufe einer langen Überlieferungsgeschichte hinzugerechnet worden. Das wird an einer Spaltung deutlich: Als um 400 v. Chr. infolge der jüdischen Selbstbesinnung nach dem babylonischen Exil die Samaritaner endgültig von der Jerusalemer Tradition ausgeschlossen wurden und ihren eigenen Tempel auf dem Garizim errichteten, besaßen sie lediglich die Thora. Sie legen diese bis heute allein ihrem Gottesdienst zugrunde.
Nach orthodoxer Tradition ist die Thora dem Mose von Gott unmittelbar geoffenbart, gewissermaßen diktiert worden, die übrigen Verfasser seien vom Geiste Gottes erfüllt gewesen. Gewiss werden in der jüdischen Theologie die Forschungen der historisch-kritischen Bibelwissenschaft anerkannt. Aber für den gläubigen Juden hat das keine Bedeutung. Aus der Thora sind dem zerstreutem Volke die Kräfte der Beharrung zugewachsen. Die Thorarolle wurde darum als heiligste Reliquie des Judentums in der Synagoge dauernd verehrt und in zum Teil kostbaren Schreinen aufbewahrt. Die biblische Weisung bedurfte allerdings erneuter Auslegung, als Jahrhunderte seit ihrer Entstehung vergangen waren und das jüdische Leben sich in der Fremde wandeln musste. Diese Denkarbeit haben die Rabbinen geleistet und im Talmud niedergelegt.
Es ging darum, dem Wort der Heiligen Schrift jene Elastizität zu verleihen, die nötig war, um unter der neuen, vom Ursprung völlig verschiedenen politischen und sozialen Situation nicht ohne geistliches Geleit zu sein. Es ging darum, das biblische Wort durch eine zeitgemäße Auslegung in seiner grundsätzlichen und unaufhörlichen Gültigkeit jeweils neu zu gewinnen.
Der Talmud („Das Lernen“) ist ein gewaltiges Sammelwerk, dessen Ursprünge in Palästina und Babylon liegen. Er enthält einmal die Mischna („Das weiderholt Gelernte“) und zum anderen die Gelehrtendiskussionen über diese Mischna, also gewissermaßen geistliche Protokolle, die sog. Gemara („Lernstoff“, „Vervollständigung“). Die Mischna umfasst eine von Rabbi Jehuda Hanassi veranstaltete Sammlung von Lehrsätzen des mündlich überlieferten „Gesetzes“. Zwar gab es schon vor ihm Mischna, vermutlich bereits zur Zei Jesu. Aber es bestand die Gefahr, dass durch verschiedene Interpretationen der Thora die geistliche Einheit des Judentums bedroht wurde. Um dieser Gefahr zu begegnen, verfasste Rabbi Jehuda unter Benutzung aller vorhandenen Sammlungen seine Mischna (um 200 n. Chr.). Er wollte damit in religiösen und gesetzlichen Fragen eine Norm bieten. Indem er die verschiedenen Meinungen der Thoralehrer jeweils zitierte, gegeneinander abgrenzte und sie seiner Meinung gegenüberstellte, schuf er ein unentbehrliches Kompendium, das bald die vorläufigen Sammlungen verdrängte. Er hat das religionsgesetzliche Material gesichtet und zum System von sechs „Ordnungen“ zusammengestellt, die das Gerüst der Mischna bilden.
Die Titel der Mischna-Ordnungen (Seradim) lauten:
- Seraim = Gesetze über Grund und Boden
- Moed = Über die Feste
- Naschim = Ehegesetze
- Nesikin = Über Zivil- und Strafrecht
- Kodaschin = Über Tempelkult und Speisegesetze
- Taharot = Über levitische Unreinheit
Jede „Ordnung“ (seder) besteht aus einer Anzahl (7-12) Traktate, die Traktate zerfallen wieder in Kapitel, die Kapitel in Paragraphen oder Lehrsätze. Die einzelnen Kapitel sind nach ihren Anfangswörtern benannt, wie auch die Bücher der Thora (und päpstlichen Enzykliken). Die in der Mischna erwähnten Lehrer werden Tannaim (die „Lernenden“) genannt. Der zweite Bestandteil des Talmud, die G e m a r a, umfaßt die erläuternden und kritischen Erörterungen über die Mischna, wie sie in den Lehrhäusern Palästinas und Babylons stattgefunden haben. Die theologischen Protokolle umfassen aber auch allerlei anderes, das in den Diskussionen vorgebracht wurde. Der Babylonische Talmud hat etwa den dreifachen Umfang des palästinensischen. Der Grund dafür dürfte in der Tatsache liegen, dass der babylonische Talmud ein Jahrhundert nach dem palästinensischen abgeschlossen wurde und somit Zeit zur Verfügung stand, das überlieferte Material zu erweitern und zu vertiefen. Darum hat auch der babylonische Talmud die größere Verbreitung gefunden. Etwa ein jahrtausend lang hat man an dem Werk gearbeitet. Seine ältesten Bestandteile gehen ins 6. Jahrhundert v. Chr. zurück, die abschließende Redaktion erfolgte im 5. nachchristlichen Jahrhundert.
