Ein Talmud-Student möchte von seinem Rabbi wissen, warum man Gott nicht nur für das Gute, sondern auch für das Leid danken soll. Das überfordert den Rabbi und er verweist seinen Schüler auf seinen eigenen, mittlerweile schon in die Jahre gekommenen Lehrer.

Einige Tage später macht sich der Student auf den Weg zu dem früheren Lehrer des Rabbis. Als sich die Haustür öffnet, steht vor ihm ein ärmlich gekleideter, kranker und unterernährter alter Mann.

»Hochverehrter Rabbi, Ihr ehemaliger Schüler schickt mich zu Ihnen. Er hat mir gesagt, dass Sie mir erklären können, warum man dem Allmächtigen nicht nur für das Gute, sondern auch für das Leid danken soll.«

»Das hat er wirklich gesagt?«, fragt der alte Mann skeptisch. »Das muss ein Irrtum sein; denn wie kann ich dir auf diese Frage antworten, da ich doch noch nie in meinem Leben Leid erfahren habe.«
